establish good habits.  If, however, a student must be absent from school, please send a note when s/he returns stating the reason for the absence.  Parents taking their children out of school for educational reasons must have prior approval from the principal.  Please ask the office for Form 1710

School Lunch & Breakfast Program  Back to TOP
Students are responsible for their breakfast and lunch money each day; however, they may pre-purchase tickets on Mondays.  Parents are always welcome to join their child for lunch.  You may purchase an adult lunch from the cafeteria or bring one from home.
We ask your support in our effort to teach and to strengthen your child's use of good manners.  Polite behavior in the cafeteria and in the halls will be stressed, as well as courtesy to all adults and to fellow students.

Medication, Health Care & Sick Room  Back to TOP

Prescription drugs needed during the school day can be given at school.  However, no medication will be given by a school official unless it is in a container dispensed by a pharmacy with the student's name, name of medication, the date the prescription was filled and directions clearly marked.  The "Parent Request and Physician Order for Medication" form must be signed and kept available to the person administering the medication.  Do not send over the counter medicines.  School personnel are not allowed to dispense these medications.

The school does not have a full-time nurse on staff.  A nurse from the Wake County Health Department will come to Holly Springs Elementary at least once a week.  School personnel can only offer the following services: bandages, taking temperatures, soap and water, TLC and an ambulance (under emergency conditions).
Students who become ill at school will have their temperatures checked by their teacher or classroom assistant.  Parents and/or emergency contacts will be notified.  Students who are too ill to remain in the classroom will be permitted to rest in the Sick Room until they are picked up from school.  PLEASE REMEMBER TO NOTIFY THE SCHOOL OFFICE OF ANY CHANGE IN ADDRESS, TELEPHONE NUMBERS AND EMERGENCY CONTACTS.  WE MUST MAINTAIN AN ACCURATE TELEPHONE NUMBER AT HOME AND WORK IN THE EVENT OF INJURIES OR EMERGENCY ILLNESSES.

Immunizations  Back to TOP

Children enrolling for the first time (K-1) should be immunized as follows:

        1. Five shots of DTP vaccine (diphtheria, whooping cough, and tetanus); if the       fourth dose is after the fourth birthday, the fifth dose is not required.
        2. Four doses of oral polio vaccine, if the third dose is after the fourth birthday, the fourth dose is not required.
        3. Two shots of MMR vaccine (rubella, rubeola, and mumps); the first dose must be given on or after the first birthday and a second dose before entering school.
        4. Three shots of Hepatitis B.
        5. Varicella Vaccine

All students entering school for the first time must present proof of a physical examination within 30 calendar days of the first day of attendance.  Any student who does not have completed immunizations or physical examination forms on file will be suspended.  We solicit support from all parents/guardians to get all required health records to the school within this time period.

Visitors  Back to TOP

All visitors to the school must "check-in" at the office before going into other parts of the building.  We welcome visitors, but we wish to know who is here and their reason.
All visitors must wear a visitor tag (to be obtained when you check-in at the office). When visiting, please park in a parking space and do not block other cars.

Communication with School Personnel  Back to TOP

Holly Springs Elementary School strongly believes that communication is a vital link between the school, home and community.  Notices, and/or newsletters will be sent home by students to keep you informed of school events, programs and other important matters.  Teachers will contact you at least twice during the school year to schedule conferences to discuss your child's progress at school.  If you wish to conference with the teacher at other times, send a note to that effect with your child.  The teacher will contact you to set up an appointment time.  Conferences are usually scheduled before and after the instructional day.  If you need to talk to an administrator or the counselor, please call the school at 557-2660 and 557-2668, respectively.

Campus Transportation Guidelines  Back to TOP

Students may be dropped off in front of the school NO EARLIER THAN 8:00 a.m.  Adults will be on duty in the carpool and bus areas.  During carpool times (8:00-8:30 a.m. and 3:00-3:15 p.m.), an adult will open and close your passenger-side car door/s for your child/ren's safety.
Carpool and day care students are dismissed at 3:00 p.m.  They will exit out the cafeteria doors where they will be placed in their cars by an adult.  Students with after school appointments must be picked up prior to 2:45 p.m.
It is very important that everyone follow and obey the campus traffic rules. No one should park in the bus loop.  No one should park in the carpool traffic loop, especially during drop-off (8:00-8:30 a.m.) and pick-up (3:00-3:15 p.m.) times.

Bus Services/Behavior  Back to TOP

Bus service is available to students living one and a half miles or more away from school. Parents/Guardians are requested to contact the school office (557-2660) when a bus is late for pick-up or drop-off.
Please remember that "riding the bus is a privilege" and students are encouraged to be considerate of the safety and well being of fellow students.  The same standards of conduct that apply to a classroom apply to a school bus.  Students can be suspended from the bus for inappropriate behaviors.
Students are assigned a regular bus stop  that is to be kept for the entire year. (Click here for bus routes.)  Buses will be named and numbered.  Any requests for a change must be submitted in writing to Gail Zadell, the assistant principal, for approval.  Written requests must also be submitted to Mrs. Zadell for permission to get off at someone else's stop.  Due to liability reasons, requests to ride a different bus will be denied.  Arrangements for after-school visits with a friend is the responsibility of the parent/guardian.

Media Center  Back to TOP

The Media Center is an integral part of the total school program.  Our media specialists will provide exciting and meaningful activities to students on each grade level.  Media Center hours are from 8:45 a.m. to 3:35 p.m., Monday through Friday.
A nominal fee for damaged books and full price for lost books will be charged.  Students may not check out their total allotment of books until overdue or lost books are returned or payment is received.
Parents are encouraged to volunteer in the Media Center.  Duties include shelving books, processing new materials, helping with circulation and inventory, and working with special projects.

Curriculum  Back to TOP

All public schools in this state are responsible for teaching grade level objectives as outlined in the North Carolina Course of Study.  Additionally, each school in Wake County provides special services to enhance and support the core curriculum.  Music, Art, Spanish, and Physical Education are provided for all students at Holly Springs.
The staff at Holly Springs Elementary is committed to integrating technology in the curriculum.  All classrooms will have computers available for daily student use.  Students will learn keyboarding as well as many other technology related skills. All students will receive computer instruction through use of several software programs, both in the classroom and during their designated computer lab times..

Dismissals Due to Inclement Weather  Back to TOP

1. The first notification of early dismissal is made to the radio/TV stations.  If the weather looks threatening, please turn on the radio or TV and wait for further word.
    2. If you are concerned about your child's well being because of the weather, you may come to the school for her/him.  It is not necessary to phone for permission, but you will need to sign your child out in the office.
    3. All children remaining at school at dismissal time who normally ride the bus will be taken home by bus.

Student Discipline  Back to TOP

Wake County School Board Policy #6410 states:
"One of the basic educational objectives is the development of self-discipline in
students.  Toward this end all students are encouraged to demonstrate acceptable
behavior patterns.  When behavior patterns disrupt the learning climate of the
school or the safety and welfare of individuals, it shall become a matter of
administrative action involving the student and/or parent or guardian."
When student behavior is of a serious nature and when all our efforts to find a solution to the problem fail, the student will be removed from the school setting.  The length of the suspension will depend on the severity and duration of the problem.
In order for all students to have a successful year, we must work together.  Please feel free to discuss with your child's teacher his or her feelings concerning discipline in the classroom.

PTA Volunteers  Back to TOP
